Message from Mr. Short
Dear Panther Parents, if you want to access your students’ STAAR scores, you can go to the Texas Assessment Student Portal on-line and look up your child’s results. Check out how to access the revised guide to using the Texas Assessment Student Portal
. This document has been updated to reflect the revisions TEA made to the site following the release of 2018 STAAR results for Grades 5 & 8.
Now for a message from our PTA about tonight’s Color Fun Run!
Color Fun Run Information:
Good morning! We are gearing up for the fun run tonight at 6:00 pm at Asa Low. This incredible event will be exciting, different, messy and fun. We have few bits of information to share so keep on reading along :). First and mostly on everyone's mind, the weather. We are definitely keeping an eye on the weather forecast and for now it appears, per the forecasts, that the rain should be out of the area by noon today, just leaving us with cloudy skies. Now that being said we are working on an alternative rain date as Texas weather loves to surprise us more often than not. I will certainly update everyone here or through school announcements if we need to cancel tomorrow once we have a good idea of the forecast.
Fun Run Fun part: The run is 9/10 of a mile that starts at Asa Low front doors, winds around Chandler Park and heads back to the starting spot. On the Asa Low grounds we will have three powder throwing stations (people that throw powder at you) of differing vivid color powder. The powder is cornstarch that has been colored by food coloring. It is Non-toxic and environmentally friendly. The run is fun and not a race so you are welcome to take your time run, walk or both. You do not have to go through the powder stations and if you choose the non-messy part just go around the powder throwers, but please wave and cheer as our volunteers love excitement!
Clothing: If you preregistered for a T-Shirt and sunglasses, you will get that when you arrive at the run. If you chose the ‘Run Only’ wear something light colored which will allow the powder to really pop on your shirt. Sunglasses are recommended just for eye protection through the powder stations. Do not wear your best dress as the powder should not stain but it might. Also bring a towel for your car ride home!!!! If you want to preserve the color on your shirt, hand-wash it in vinegar when you get home, air-dry and it is good from there.
Arrive: I'll be there early and so you are welcome to come earlier than 6:00 if you'd like to get your SWAG bag – pre-registrants get these. If you did not sign up already, you can do so with $20 at the registration table at 6:00. The table will be at the front doors of Asa Low. Uncle Bo's will be cooking burgers so bring some extra cash if you would like to grab dinner after the run. Other yummy concessions will be available. Looking forward to a non-rainy day and loads of fun.
Parking: As always, Mr. Short is worried about parking. When you arrive at Asa Low, please drive all the way around and utilize all the parking spots in the back of the building first. Parking will most likely fill up quickly! Mr. Short would prefer that nobody park in front of Asa Low since that is where most of the Color Fun Run Activity will be centered. If the back parking lot fills up completely, you may park down by the STEM Academy, the Police Department, and Wester Middle School. Be warned, you will be on your own for parking…nobody will be directing traffic or parking! Good Luck!
Thank you! It’s going to be FUN!
Finally, parents of 5th graders: next week all four teams will be going on a little mini-field trip to the MISD Agricultural Center. This field trip is sponsored by the Texas Wildlife Association and will involve several hands-on science activities that align perfectly with the state standards in our Science Curriculum. We are very excited about this opportunity for our kids just one week before they take the Science STAAR! Students will ride in buses out to the MISD Ag Center, which is located next to Tarver Rendon Elementary School. The field trip is divided into two days, so two teams will go each day.
First, Columbia and Tulane will go on the field trip on Tuesday, May 8. Then, Vanderbilt and Yale will go on the field trip on Thursday May 10.
• Tuesday May 8 - Columbia and Tulane
• Thursday May 10 - Vanderbilt and Yale
Please make sure that your child has turned in their field trip permission form to their science teacher. Also, thank you to the parents who have volunteered to chaperone this field trip with our teachers and students!
