Our robotics team, the Mansfield HS “Mad Hackers" competed this Saturday in Ferris ISD for our final FIRST Robotics FTC league competition against 10 other teams from south DFW. We ended up in 6th place for the regular season but were selected as the partner team by the second place team from Ben Barber, the “Fighting Pickles," for the elimination rounds. The two Mansfield team helped each other make some last minute robot repairs and programming to go on to sweep both their semi final matches and the finals. Both teams are now moving on to the North Texas Regional in Allen Tx in three weeks to compete with the best 40-50 from north Texas.
More impressively, they received the “Connect Award” for the best team who presented to a panel of judges on how they helped in the community by mentoring the Roberta Tipps elementary Lego robotics team, established a business plan and team management system, organized fundraising from local business, and kept an “Engineering Notebook” which showed all of their ideas, plans, finances, and meeting minuets. They also where runner ups for the “Inspire Award” that the Ben Barber Team won; the most prestigious award given to the the most professional and innovative team in all aspects of the competition.
For a 1st year robotics team, this is absolutely incredible, especially considering they are all Freshman with a few Sophomores who have been juggling band schedules, athletics tryouts and practices, AP tutorials and tutoring. These students have been working every day after school to 5pm and even 7pm on some late Friday nights for the past 3-4 months truly learning how to work as a group of young engineers.
